The most unusual radish microgreen variety Sango: how to grow it

Sango is the name of a radish variety popular among health food advocates. This leafy (also known as purple) variety is renowned for its decorative appearance, excellent flavor, rich vitamin content, and numerous medicinal properties. Its seeds are purchased for growing microgreens—a trendy superfood and an ingredient in restaurant dishes.

Introduction to the variety

Sango is a new variety, bred specifically to produce vitamin-rich greens. It is distinguished by its striking harvest and remarkable taste. The variety boasts many excellent characteristics:

  • seed germination - from 92% to 99%;
  • powerful growth energy and high fruit bearing capacity;
  • short harvesting period (microgreens grow in 5-7 days, leafy greens in 10 days).

Features of the appearance of the plant and root crops

Sango plants are small, reaching a height of no more than 10-15 cm. The seedlings, grown as microgreens, are harvested when they reach 6 cm. They are quite decorative in appearance and have beautiful coloring:

  • purple with a green tint - at the petioles;
  • purple-red - near the leaves.

Sango roots are round and dark red. They are not commonly grown.

The leafy greens and sprouts have a distinct flavor: slightly bitter, delicate, reminiscent of radish, and with a hint of radish spice. Their juiciness and piquancy make them an ideal addition to many dishes:

  • salads;
  • soups and broths;
  • sandwiches and sandwiches;
  • vegetable, meat and fish dishes.
Microgreens are eaten only fresh. They enhance the flavor of salty and spicy dishes. They pair beautifully with boiled eggs, fried meat, cured pork, vegetables (peppers, cabbage, cucumbers), apples, and rhubarb. They are also used to decorate restaurant dishes (steaks, salads, sushi).

Sango's harvest has excellent shelf life. Radish greens can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 7 days, remaining juicy, firm, delicious, and crisp.

Methods for sprouting microgreen seeds

Growing leafy radishes is possible in an open garden bed or indoors on a windowsill or glassed-in balcony. The latter method is used to produce microgreens (sprouts).

If you prefer to grow greens in your garden, select a sunny spot in the southern sector of the garden. The soil there should meet the following requirements:

  • be loose;
  • fertile;
  • drained;
  • with neutral acidity (if the soil is acidic, it will need to be limed).

Sow the seeds in a garden bed in late March. Germinate them for two days the day before sowing, wrapping them in a damp piece of cotton cloth.

If you prefer to grow Sango radish microgreens at home, use one of two methods:

  • jar;
  • tray.

With any of these methods for growing vitamin-rich sprouts, you'll need to choose a well-lit corner of your apartment. This could be a south-facing window or an insulated balcony that always gets plenty of light.

Canned

To grow microgreens, you'll need a jar and a matching sieve lid. You won't need a growing medium or a special linen or jute mat.

Follow these steps:

  1. Place radish seeds in a jar and seal with a strainer lid.
  2. Cover the seeds in a jar with water. Rinse them. Soak for 5-6 hours.
  3. Drain the water. Turn the jar on its side or with the lid down for further germination of the seeds.
  4. Germinate the seeds for 2-5 days until the sprouts reach a height of 5-6 cm. Rinse them 2-3 times daily.

After cutting the Sango sprouts, store them in the refrigerator. If desired, you can also cut the micro sprouts, which have reached 2-3 cm in length. They are also rich in vitamins and delicious.

Tray

This method involves growing microgreens indoors in a tray filled with a nutrient-rich substrate or with a moisture-retaining mat (linen, jute, or coconut) inserted into it. The latter can be replaced with other materials such as folded cheesecloth or cotton wool.

Germinate seeds by following these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Spread radish seeds evenly over the surface of the substrate or mat.
  2. Moisten them generously using a spray bottle.
  3. Cover the tray with plastic wrap or a lid. Leave it in a warm, dark place for 3 days. Ventilate the seeds daily and moisten them (as needed).
  4. Move the tray to a sunny windowsill. Provide the seeds with at least 10-15 hours of daylight using a grow light.
  5. Water the microgreens daily, 1-2 times per day. Once the sprouts reach 6 cm in height, you can begin cutting them.

The tray method is also suitable for growing leafy greens (baby leaves) of Sango radish. Use a nutrient solution instead of water. Place the seeds on the substrate or mat more spacingly than when growing microgreens. Once the plants have 3-4 leaves, they are ready for harvesting.

Growing and care

Sow sprouted purple radish seeds in a garden bed, following the pattern:

  • the distance between rows is 10-15 cm;
  • seeding depth - 1-2 cm.

After sowing, firm the soil in the bed and water. If desired, you can cover the seedlings with plastic film for the first few days. Seedlings will emerge quickly. On the eighth day, when they reach a height of over 10 cm, they will be ready for harvesting. Re-sow Sango radishes every 10 days.

Maintaining a bed with leafy crops is simple. It involves the following procedures:

  • WateringWater the soil regularly, preventing it from drying out. Pay particular attention to keeping the bed moist on hot days.
  • FertilizationProvide your vegetable crop with additional nutrition. Feed the planting with complex fertilizers or organic matter (humus, compost).

Reviews

Peter, 34 years old, summer resident, Saratov.
Even though a packet of Sango seeds is expensive, as for radishes, I don't regret buying it. I grew the leafy greens at my dacha. They have a beautiful appearance and a wonderful taste. I liked these radishes. Now I'm planning to start growing them for sale. These bright purple sprouts seem to sell out quickly.

Having read about the benefits of microgreens, I bought Sango seeds. I grew them on a windowsill in a tray with damp cotton wool. On the second day, the seeds sprouted. The sprouts surprised me with their beautiful lavender color. Their flavor was slightly spicy, pleasant. The aroma is quite distinctive, not to everyone's taste. But they provide tons of benefits!

Sango is an early-ripening variety of leafy radish grown as a microgreen at home. It's an excellent choice for those looking to diversify their menu with a healthy, decorative vegetable with a wonderful, mild flavor. This green is ideal for preparing a variety of culinary delights and detox smoothies.
