Honey carrot varieties: characteristics and differences

Honey carrots quickly gained popularity thanks to their excellent varietal qualities. This crop boasts not only high yields but also exceptional flavor, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of culinary applications. It's important to choose the right site, plant the seeds, and provide proper care.

Origin of the variety

The crop was developed by breeders B. G. Zinc and N. V. Konovalova in the experimental fields of the Moscow company "Agrofirm Aelita." In 2008, the variety was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements and recommended for mass cultivation. The central region of Russia was designated as the primary cultivation region.

Description and characteristics

The Honey Carrot is characterized by a semi-spreading rosette of medium-sized, light-green leaves, which range from finely to moderately dissected. The roots are large, reaching up to 18 cm in length, and are bright orange in color due to their high carotene content.

Optimizing irrigation to increase crop yields
  • • Watering should be done early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize water evaporation.
  • • Use drip irrigation to evenly moisten the soil and prevent crust formation on the surface.

The vegetables are cylindrical in shape with a slight pointed end, and weigh between 120 and 210 g. They have excellent flavor and sweetness. This is due to the high sugar content in the pulp, which sometimes reaches 10%, but averages between 5.3 and 6.8%. The pulp is very juicy and crisp.

The Medovaya variety is versatile. It's good both fresh and processed (puree or juice). It can be frozen or stored fresh during the winter.

Description of Honey Carrots

How is it different from other varieties?

This variety is considered a mid-late to late variety, depending on growing conditions. The period from germination to full maturity is 115-125 days. Yields are quite high for small farms, reaching 5-7 kg per square meter.

In large vegetable growing enterprises, the maximum commercial yield reaches 450-480 centners per hectare. Commercial yields range from 73 to 90% of the total harvest.

This variety grows well and produces abundant yields in sandy and loamy soils. In acidic soils, apply lime before planting to bring the pH to a neutral level.

Critical soil parameters for successful cultivation
  • ✓ Soil pH should be between 6.0-6.8 for optimal nutrient absorption.
  • ✓ The soil must be well-drained to avoid water stagnation and root rot.

Gardeners note its nutritional value and high carotene content, making it ideal for baby food. In addition to these benefits, it also has other benefits:

Cautions when growing
  • × Avoid over-use of nitrogen fertilizers as this can lead to excessive growth of tops at the expense of root crops.
  • × Avoid planting carrots after crops susceptible to the same pests and diseases to reduce the risk of infection.
resistance to dangerous diseases such as powdery mildew, bacterial and black rot, rhizoctonia, brown spot;
versatility of use, good shelf life;
attractive presentation: evenness and smoothness of root crops, their bright color;
heat resistance, small core;
Suitable for storage from autumn to spring.
Among the disadvantages, some agronomists point out the need for frequent watering in small portions, since Medovaya does not tolerate abundant irrigation.

Where can I buy this variety?

Always check the expiration date on the seed packaging. Fresh seed has a better germination rate. Follow these other recommendations:

  • Learn as much as possible about the variety you're considering. Check whether it's suitable for your region and growing purposes.
  • Choose well-known companies and trusted stores or online stores with good reviews.
  • Seed packaging must be intact and undamaged. Preferably, use sealed packages to protect the seeds from moisture and contamination.

I've been growing Medovaya carrots for several seasons now, and each time I'm amazed by their disease resistance. Even in less favorable years, the yield remains high. The roots are always bright orange and sweet, with a high carotene content. I especially enjoy using them for making fresh juices and purees.
