Infinity is a recently introduced mid-late onion variety. It has won the hearts of Russian gardeners thanks to its marketable appearance, excellent flavor, and excellent shelf life. Its harvest lasts for over nine months and tolerates long-distance transportation well.
When and by whom was it selected?
Infinity is a hybrid resistant to fusarium and pink rot, developed by Agroholding LLC. Its authorship belongs to breeders A. A. Sedin and V. V. Pavlyuk.
It appeared in the Russian Federation State Register in 2014 as a species intended for cultivation in the following regions:
- North Caucasian;
- Lower Volga.
The hybrid's yield indicators are considered average:
- farmers harvest from 24,700 to 42,400 kg per 1 hectare in the case of industrial cultivation of vegetables;
- 91,000 kg per 1 ha is the maximum yield collected during testing of the new breeding product.
Description of the plant
The Infinity onion is distinguished by a robust rosette of leaves and strong roots, allowing it to form large bulbs. It is characterized by its small-celled nature. One plant produces 1-2 bulbs per cell.
Turnips have the following characteristics:
- medium size;
- weight - 90-120 g;
- rounded shape;
- neck of medium thickness;
- 4-6 dry scales of dark brown color with a bronze tint;
- juiciness and fleshiness of white scales.
Due to the vegetable's high dry matter content and large number of tightly fitting outer scales, not only mechanized harvesting is possible, but also long-term storage of turnips and their transportation over long distances.
Taste characteristics and purpose
The hybrid bulbs have a sharp, piquant flavor and are used universally:
- eaten fresh;
- added to various dishes (salads, soups, sauces, side dishes);
- dry;
- canned.
Growing and care
Infinity is a mid-late onion variety. The crop ripens in 130-135 days from germination. This hybrid is suitable for growing onions from seed. Gardeners cultivate it as an annual crop.
- ✓ The optimal soil temperature for sowing Infinity onion seeds should not be below +5°C.
- ✓ To prevent diseases, it is recommended to use only certified seeds.
Set aside a plot of your garden for planting this spicy vegetable that meets the following requirements:
- well lit;
- with loose and fertile soil;
- previously used for growing pumpkins, tomatoes, potatoes;
- cleared of weeds and stones.
Start sowing hybrid seeds in the first warm days of spring (late March). First, prepare the area for the onion bed:
- dig up the soil;
- add humus and complex mineral fertilizers.
Pre-treat the seeds: soak them in water or aloe juice for 12 hours (this folk remedy helps stimulate seedling growth).
Level the soil in the area. Make furrows in it. Water the furrows before sowing. Sow the Infinity onion seeds according to the following pattern:
- distance between rows - 35-40 cm;
- the distance between seeds is 2 cm;
- seeding depth - 1-2 cm.
Cover the seed furrows with dry soil. Don't water them again to prevent a soil crust from forming, which would prevent the seedlings from sprouting.
Provide your onion bed with proper care to ensure a bountiful harvest. This includes the following steps:
- WateringMonitor the soil. Don't let it dry out. Water once every 10 days. Water the onion beds on hot days. Use 3 liters of water per square meter of planting.
Water the onions until mid-July. During the second half of summer, this pungent vegetable doesn't require watering. Avoiding watering will ensure the turnips stay fresh during winter storage. - Loosening the soil. Loosen the soil in the garden bed after watering to avoid the formation of dense soil crusts.
- WeedingRemove weeds regularly. Be especially careful after seedlings emerge to prevent them from suppressing their growth.
- Carrying out treatments against diseases and pestsUse fungicides (Quardis, Ordan) and the insecticide Kysh-pest if necessary.
- Top dressingApply fertilizer once before sowing the seeds. Use a mixture of humus (2 kg) with ammonium nitrate (10 g), superphosphate (30 g), and potassium salt (20 g). Apply 2 kg of the mixture per 1 square meter of onion planting.
