Why is Bohemia chives considered the best?

The Bohemia onion is a perennial chive variety intended for fresh consumption only. We owe its development to Yuri Alekseev, Petr Klapsta, and Jiri Khoraly, renowned breeders from the Semko agricultural company. This variety is not a hybrid; it was officially registered in 1997 after successfully passing variety trials.

Introduction to the variety

The plant has a moderately branched rosette and quickly recovers after pruning. It can grow successfully in a single plot for five years, serving as a honey plant and as a decorative element thanks to the fluffy lilac-colored balls that appear on young shoots in the spring.

The Bohemia onion is widely grown in gardens and on farms, and is also used as a commercial vegetable. This variety is highly prized for its abundant yield and versatility: it can be used as a salad green or as a decorative element.

The variety has the following characteristics:

  • due to the rapid growth of cut green mass, the yield of products increases several times;
  • long period of cultivation in one place;
  • Suitable for growing on a balcony;
  • impeccable quality of greens;
  • excellent appearance and taste;
  • easy to care for;
  • good transportability and shelf life in cool conditions;
  • lack of susceptibility to pest infestation;
  • protection against common onion diseases.

The variety has the following characteristics

The Bohemia variety promises impressive yields—6-8 kg per square meter per season. Despite its many positive qualities, this chive is susceptible to onion fly.
Critical aspects of onion fly control
  • × Onion flies prefer to lay eggs in the soil near plants in early May. Without preventative measures, the risk of infection is high.
  • × The use of chemicals such as Aktara requires strict adherence to treatment deadlines – no later than 20 days before harvest.

Appearance, taste, purpose

This variety of chives is distinguished by its semi-sharp aroma and the flavor of its leaves. The vitamin C concentration in this product reaches 140-160 mg per 100 g of raw product, making it a valuable source of nutrients. It also contains important micronutrients: selenium, magnesium, phosphorus, ascorbic acid, and carotene.

Appearance, taste, purpose

Key characteristics of the bow include:

  • tubular, hollow stems;
  • the length of the leaves is within 40-50 cm;
  • the stem diameter varies from 0.5 to 0.9 cm;
  • the weight in the first year of life fluctuates between 20 and 40 g from each bush, while in the second or third year it reaches 200 g;
  • deep green color;
  • there is a small wax layer on the surface;
  • The taste is characterized as harmoniously spicy.

Taste, purpose

Green onions are ideal for fresh addition to broths, side dishes, salads, sauces, and marinades. They can also be chopped and frozen for use during the colder months.

Growing and care

Bohemia onions can be grown from both seeds and cuttings. The optimal seeding rate is 1.0-1.3 g per square meter. In small plots, it's best to sow 3-5 seeds per hole, spaced 25-35 cm apart.

Optimal conditions for growing
  • ✓ The soil should be well-drained, with a pH of 6.0-7.0, to prevent water stagnation and the development of fungal diseases.
  • ✓ Regular watering in the morning helps avoid over-watering and reduces the risk of disease.

Other features:

  • Once the plants have sprouted, there should be approximately 20 cm between them, and 25-35 cm between rows.
  • It is recommended to trim onion leaves starting from the second year of the plant’s life, when they reach 25 cm in height.
  • The best conditions for this variety are light, nutrient-rich soil with a deep plowing layer and a neutral acidity level.
  • The variety requires sufficient light, so it should be planted in open sunny places.

We grow chives for mass production. Among the many varieties we've tried over 18 years of farming, we've narrowed our selection to three. Bohemia holds a special place among them – it's high-yielding, tasty, transportable, and keeps well. These are the most important requirements and criteria for us.

An excellent variety of chives, with beautiful bright green leaves and impeccable immunity. The only problem we encounter when growing them is an infestation of onion flies. To prevent this, we spray them with Aktara every spring.

Bohemia is generally an easy-to-grow crop, and its flavor is pleasant, not too pungent. However, onion flies remain a problem. Despite this, we've learned to combat them naturally (to avoid chemicals). To do this, we plant carrots on one side of the chives and garlic on the other.

Bohemia is highly resistant to diseases and pests, making it ideal for beginning gardeners. The period from flowering to harvesting is only 20-30 days, making it considered an early-ripening variety.
