The Bohemia onion is a perennial chive variety intended for fresh consumption only. We owe its development to Yuri Alekseev, Petr Klapsta, and Jiri Khoraly, renowned breeders from the Semko agricultural company. This variety is not a hybrid; it was officially registered in 1997 after successfully passing variety trials.
Introduction to the variety
The plant has a moderately branched rosette and quickly recovers after pruning. It can grow successfully in a single plot for five years, serving as a honey plant and as a decorative element thanks to the fluffy lilac-colored balls that appear on young shoots in the spring.
The Bohemia onion is widely grown in gardens and on farms, and is also used as a commercial vegetable. This variety is highly prized for its abundant yield and versatility: it can be used as a salad green or as a decorative element.
The variety has the following characteristics:
- due to the rapid growth of cut green mass, the yield of products increases several times;
- long period of cultivation in one place;
- Suitable for growing on a balcony;
- impeccable quality of greens;
- excellent appearance and taste;
- easy to care for;
- good transportability and shelf life in cool conditions;
- lack of susceptibility to pest infestation;
- protection against common onion diseases.
Appearance, taste, purpose
This variety of chives is distinguished by its semi-sharp aroma and the flavor of its leaves. The vitamin C concentration in this product reaches 140-160 mg per 100 g of raw product, making it a valuable source of nutrients. It also contains important micronutrients: selenium, magnesium, phosphorus, ascorbic acid, and carotene.
Key characteristics of the bow include:
- tubular, hollow stems;
- the length of the leaves is within 40-50 cm;
- the stem diameter varies from 0.5 to 0.9 cm;
- the weight in the first year of life fluctuates between 20 and 40 g from each bush, while in the second or third year it reaches 200 g;
- deep green color;
- there is a small wax layer on the surface;
- The taste is characterized as harmoniously spicy.
Growing and care
Bohemia onions can be grown from both seeds and cuttings. The optimal seeding rate is 1.0-1.3 g per square meter. In small plots, it's best to sow 3-5 seeds per hole, spaced 25-35 cm apart.
- ✓ The soil should be well-drained, with a pH of 6.0-7.0, to prevent water stagnation and the development of fungal diseases.
- ✓ Regular watering in the morning helps avoid over-watering and reduces the risk of disease.
Other features:
- Once the plants have sprouted, there should be approximately 20 cm between them, and 25-35 cm between rows.
- It is recommended to trim onion leaves starting from the second year of the plant’s life, when they reach 25 cm in height.
- The best conditions for this variety are light, nutrient-rich soil with a deep plowing layer and a neutral acidity level.
- The variety requires sufficient light, so it should be planted in open sunny places.
Reviews
Bohemia is highly resistant to diseases and pests, making it ideal for beginning gardeners. The period from flowering to harvesting is only 20-30 days, making it considered an early-ripening variety.
