Review of the early ripening grape variety Kodryanka

The Kodryanka grape is a unique plant that requires little attention. It produces fruit even in poor soil and adapts to any climate. These qualities are why gardeners love to plant this variety in their gardens.

History of variety selection

Origin: Moldova, Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Its ancestors are the Moldova and Marshal'skiy varieties. After numerous experiments, it was added to the country's state register of varieties. Some sources indicate that the Codreanca grape is also known as Black Magic.

Description of the Codryanka grape variety

The bush is vigorous, reaching a height of 2 meters. It requires little care and thrives in poor soil. The vines are covered in large, round leaves with a wavy profile. The undersides are covered in bristly hairs. Sharp teeth protrude along the leaf edges. The vines always produce shoots, which ripen at the end of the season.

The plant produces clusters weighing 0.5-2 kg. These produce large, oblong purple berries, each weighing 10 to 15 g. The flesh is crisp and firm, sweet, and has a pleasant aroma. The skin is thin, and the sugar content in the fruit ranges from 10 to 20%.

It is better to grow the plant in a warm climate, but some gardeners take a risk and plant it in the middle zone, covering it from frost for the winter.

Characteristics of the variety

It's considered a table variety, so its primary use is fresh eating. The berries are firmly attached to the stem, making them suitable for long-distance transport.

When fully ripe, the fruit contains approximately 15% sugar. Experienced tasters have rated it 9.1 points. Codryanka grapes can remain on the plant for a long time without losing their flavor or marketability.

Productivity and fruiting

Gardeners living in regions with short summers are always concerned about the bush's ripening time. Based on this criterion, it's safe to say that the plant is best grown in temperate climates, as Kodryanka is considered an early crop.

The fruits ripen 90 days after bud break. Gardeners consider rationing the Codryanka grapes a must. The number of clusters depends on the age and size of the plant.

In terms of yield, Codryanka grapes yield approximately 15 tons of berries per hectare. The fruit is sweet and pleasant to the taste, always high-quality and delicious, regardless of environmental conditions.

If the harvest is not collected on time, it will fall off completely.

Areas of use of fruits

Codryanka grapes are a table variety, so they are eaten fresh. The fruit retains its marketable appearance for a long time, making them suitable for long-term transportation and storage.

Wine

Codryanka berries make excellent jams, drinks, sauces, and wines. They can be dried to make raisins, but many gardeners avoid this because the berries contain seeds.

Codryanka grapes produce excellent wine.

Drought and frost resistance

This variety boasts excellent cold tolerance, and the plant also tolerates spring frosts well. Covering the plant is only necessary when the air temperature drops below -22 degrees Celsius; the plant can withstand temperatures above that without issue.

The vines don't suffer or die from the summer heat. However, this doesn't mean they stop watering; on the contrary, they increase the amount of water during this period.

Resistance to diseases and pests

The plant has a fairly strong immune system and is virtually immune to mildew and oidium.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Kodryanka grape variety, like other plants, has its pros and cons, which must be taken into account when growing this bush.

Advantages of the variety:

  • high taste qualities, pleasant aroma;
  • excellent transportability;
  • maintains its marketable appearance for a long period of time;
  • strong immunity;
  • early ripening;
  • the quality of berries does not depend on climate and weather;
  • high yield.

Disadvantages of the variety:

  • It is necessary to regulate the bushes, otherwise a large amount of the harvest will break the branches;
  • Over time, the berries may become smaller.

Rules for planting grapes

The Codryanka grape is considered one of the most easy-to-grow grapes, but to consistently produce a large harvest, it must be planted correctly and on time. Let's look at the key aspects of grape planting.

Planting grapes

Deadlines

The plant can be planted in either fall or spring. The only exception is in the northern regions of Russia—spring is best. This will help the bush establish roots more quickly. Grapes are often planted in mid- to late spring, when the soil has warmed to 16 degrees Celsius.

Choosing a location

Almost any grape variety thrives in warmth and sun, and Codryanka is no exception. The vine should be planted in a location protected from drafts and well-lit. A southeast-facing slope or the southern part of the garden is an excellent option.

Codryanka is not demanding to the soil, however it develops slowly in heavy soil.

Selection and preparation of planting material

A bountiful harvest can only be achieved with careful selection of planting material. It's essential to use a one-year-old cutting, as a perennial shoot may not thrive in a new location. A suitable seedling should have one or two vines.

Planting: step-by-step instructions

Planting grapes is not difficult, but you need to follow a certain algorithm of actions:

  1. When planting in spring, dig and fertilize the hole in early autumn; when planting in autumn, dig a hole a month before planting the seedling.
  2. Place drainage into the recess.
  3. Make a mixture of soil, humus, and sand (2:1:1), fertilizer (2 teaspoons), and ash (1 shovel). Fill the hole with this mixture and leave it until you plant the variety.
  4. When planting, place the cutting in the hole at a 45-degree angle and cover the roots with fertile soil. Pay attention to the root collar; it should be 50 mm above the ground.
  5. Water the soil, mulch it with humus and sawdust.

Features of caring for the Codryanka grapes

Caring for the Kodryanka variety is not particularly difficult; you just need to water the bush on time, fertilize it, and prune it.

Watering and fertilizing

In spring, the bush actively grows shoots, so nitrogen is considered an excellent fertilizer; it promotes the growth of green mass. During flowering, the plant requires nitrogen and potassium. Apply phosphorus 14 days before technical maturity.

The older the plant, the more fertilizer it needs. Plants in their first and second years don't require fertilization, especially if they were fed during planting. In spring and fall, mulch the soil around the grapes using compost.

Optimal watering schedule for young bushes
  1. The first watering after planting is immediate, using 10 liters of water per bush.
  2. Subsequent waterings should be done every 7 days, increasing the volume of water to 15 liters per bush during the period of active growth.
  3. In hot weather, increase the frequency of watering to 2 times a week.

To ensure a bountiful harvest, the top layer of soil should not be allowed to dry out completely. The standard water requirement per vine is 6 buckets.

Shaping and pruning

When the bush reaches 2 or 3 years of age, it is pruned. This is best done after the growing season. Leave 5-10 buds on the vine and no more than 2 on the replacement shoot. Reduce the number of shoots to 16.

In the fall, grapes need to be prepared for winter by removing all dry, old, and damaged branches. In the spring, get rid of any that didn't survive the frost.

Reproduction

The bush is propagated by cuttings; this procedure should be carried out in the spring before the sap begins to flow.

Critical parameters for successful rooting of cuttings
  • ✓ The water temperature for soaking cuttings should not be lower than +25°C to activate root formation.
  • ✓ The cuttings should be at least 40 cm long to ensure sufficient nutrients before rooting.

Grape propagation algorithm:

  1. Cut the cutting with a sharp knife and place it in a container with water for a couple of days.
  2. Transfer the cutting to another container with a nutrient mixture. To create the mixture, use a couple of drops of "Humate" per 1 liter of water. This product promotes rapid rooting in the soil.
  3. After a couple of days, plant the cutting in the ground. Planting is no different from planting a seedling.
  4. During the winter season, the cuttings are covered with film so that they can survive the frosts.

It will take 1 year longer to wait for a harvest from a cutting than from a 1-year-old seedling.

Protecting crops from insects and birds

Birds and insects are the main enemies of grapes, as the birds love to feast on the juicy and delicious berries. To protect against pests, cover the area where the grape clusters grow with a lightweight nylon net, hanging it on both sides of the trellis to form a belt (about 1 m high).

Shelter for the winter

As mentioned earlier, the bush needs to be covered if the temperature drops below -22 degrees Celsius. Cover the plant with hay or straw in November.

Diseases and pests

Grapes have a strong immune system, but preventative measures are essential. Treat the vine with Topaz, Quadrisom, Storbi, Bordeaux mixture, or Ridomilol Gold.

Precautions when using chemical protective equipment
  • × Avoid treating plants in sunny weather to prevent leaf burn.
  • × Do not mix different chemicals without first checking for compatibility.

Treatment is carried out 3 times per season:

  • 1st – after winter;
  • 2nd – during the growing season;
  • 3rd – after flowering.
