Characteristics of the Aromatic grape and the nuances of planting and care

Breeders continue to develop new grape varieties for cultivation in private plots, but older varieties remain popular. The Aromatny variety is widely grown, boasting excellent characteristics and producing good yields with proper and timely care.

History of selection

Created by Ukrainian specialists from the National Scientific Center "V.E. Tairov Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking." The variety was developed by a team of authors, including L.F. Meleshko, E.P. Chebanenko, M.I. Tulaev, M.G. Bankovskaya, L.M. Pismennaya, and L.V. Gerus.

The creation was achieved by crossing two other varieties—Vertish Chilaga and Romulus. The variety was officially approved for use in 2009.

Ampelographic description

The bushes are medium-sized, compact, and well-branched. They have good resistance to diseases and pests.

Characteristic features:

  • A mature one-year-old shoot has a rich purple-brown color, especially noticeable at the nodes, and its surface is decorated with grooves.
  • The plants are covered with large, five-lobed, deeply dissected dark green leaves. Fine bubbles are present on the surface.
  • The foliage creates a dense green carpet that protects the bunches from sunburn.
  • The cluster is medium-sized, weighing around 200 g, with a cylindrical-conical shape and medium density. It is winged, adding a distinctive character.
The berry, weighing an average of 1.3 g, is round and white-pink, combining thin skin with juicy flesh. The flavor offers a unique harmony of strawberry notes with a slight caramel aftertaste.

Economic characteristics

This early-ripening variety is characterized by good shoot maturation, high winter hardiness, and frost resistance (-23-25°C). It has good immunity and is rarely susceptible to major fungal diseases.

The yield is 160 centners per hectare. Eighty percent of the shoots bear fruit. The juice sugar content is 18 g/100 cm3, and the acidity is 6.5 g/dm3. The dry wine has a tasting score of 7.85 points.

Use of the Aromatic grape variety

Grapes are widely used to produce table wines and for fresh consumption. Their pleasant flavor and aroma make them a popular choice for fresh consumption. The berries are also used to produce high-quality dessert wines.

Growing and care rules

To successfully grow the crop, follow certain rules. Follow these recommendations:

  • Landing. Choose a sunny, well-ventilated planting location. Prepare the soil by enriching it with organic matter.
  • Top dressing. Feed the grapes regularly, especially during periods of active growth.
  • Watering. Provide regular watering, especially during dry periods. Avoid overwatering.
  • Trimming. Prune branches to maintain the bush's shape and stimulate fruit production. Pruning is best done during the bush's dormant period.
  • Protection from diseases and pests. Monitor the plant's condition and take appropriate measures to protect against diseases and pests. Fragrant grapes are resistant to some diseases, but regular inspection is necessary.
  • Support. Provide support for the plant, especially during fruiting periods, to avoid damage to the branches under the weight of the berries.
Critical aspects of soil preparation
  • × Avoid applying fresh manure immediately before planting, as it can burn the plant's roots. The optimal time to apply it is the fall of the previous year.
  • × Avoid areas with a high water table (less than 1.5 m from the surface) to prevent root rot.

Growing and care rules

Optimal conditions for watering
  • ✓ Watering should be done early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize water evaporation.
  • ✓ Use drip irrigation to ensure even moisture distribution to the root zone without over-watering the foliage.

By following these care recommendations, you can grow a crop with a high yield and high-quality berries.

Pruning errors
  • × Do not prune during the period of active sap flow (early spring) to avoid “weeping” of the vine and weakening of the plant.
  • × Avoid pruning too short (less than 4-6 buds) as this can significantly reduce yield.

Collection Features

The first fruits ripen in just 110-115 days from the start of growth. Ripe berries have a rich, glossy hue, indicating they are ready for picking. The leaves surrounding the clusters serve as a readiness indicator: the presence of characteristic wine-red tips.

Pick the bunches carefully, avoiding damage to the berries. Fresh berries are best consumed within the first few days after picking, when they are at their peak quality and freshness. In a cool place and under proper storage conditions (0-4°C, high humidity), the berries can be stored for up to 1-2 weeks.

Growing grapes has become a fascinating hobby for me. This variety not only delivers high yields and high-quality berries, but also requires minimal care. I especially appreciate its winter hardiness, which allows it to be successfully grown even in our cold climate. I recommend it to anyone who wants to try their hand at winemaking or simply enjoys this crop.
