I went fishing at the end of January this year and caught a trophy zander.

Sharing the latest fishing news. I'll be honest: I'm not a professional fisherman, just a hobbyist. Sometimes I enjoy keeping my husband company. And honestly, I enjoy fishing in winter more than any other time of year. Although now, in the dead of winter, a bite is a rare occurrence. But somehow, I'm lucky.

I won't keep you in suspense – here's the beauty I caught this week:

Zander

I want to brag – out of all the fishermen around us (about 30 of them), I was the only one who landed such a monster. Ha-ha, you should have seen everyone's eyes! Not only did they all give me sideways glances when they came out onto the ice, like, "Woman on the ice!" But I also outfished them!

I went fishing at the end of January this year and caught a trophy zander.

The fish weighed 1.4 kg. But by the looks of it, I'd have guessed even more. The pike-perch had a really huge head!

I also caught a zander weighing 250 grams that day. It wasn't big, but I was still happy about it! Incidentally, no one else saw a bite that day. Apparently, they're right about not liking women on the ice!

Detailed report

Now, enough bragging. It's time to get down to the details: fishing spot, tackle, and other details:

  • Fishing spot: Samara Region, Tolyatti, Volga River, Komsomolsky District River Terminal, exact location – near the breakwater. The photo below shows the fishing spot (along Kommunisticheskaya Street).
    Tolyatti Volga
  • Weather: Wind 5-9 m/s, cloudy. Cold -4 degrees.
  • Depth: 17 m.
  • Tackle: A spinner with a live sprat on the end. It's not even sprat, but immortelle.
  • Bottom: snag.

This is what the spoon looks like:

And here is the immortelle:

These types of lures are custom-made. A custom project. But they're very similar to the "Tamentai" lures, which are sold at any fishing store for 500 rubles or more. That's why I had to custom-make similar lures; it was much cheaper, plus I could customize the colors to my taste and weight.

But even here, it's not all that simple. You need to accurately predict which color will work today/tomorrow. So I make five different rods at once and test them on site. If the bright colors don't work, I try more natural ones, designed for fry.

That day, my husband was fishing with a jig and sprat and tried a balancer (Rapala), but he didn’t even see a bite.

Fishing results

We cut the fish into pieces and salted it in oil and onions. Three hours later, we had eaten it all. Delicious!

We had plans to go to the same spot the next day, but alas, the weather ruined everything. It's currently +2°C, rain, and winds are gusting at 20 m/s. And this is in February! Usually, around this time, it's -20°C. And here, spring has sprung... So, as soon as I get back on the ice, stay tuned for the next report!
