Petunias are ideal plants, attracting gardeners with their long, lush blooms. Petunias are grown in flowerbeds, hanging baskets, and pots, and they adorn balconies, gazebos, and city parks.
Here in Krasnoyarsk, petunias of various colors bloom in every yard all summer long.
I also really love these unpretentious flowers and have been growing them at my dacha for many years.
They're easy to grow from seedlings, despite their very small seeds. I always enjoy the process of growing seedlings—from the smallest seed, which you can't even see without glasses, tiny sprouts emerge and grow slowly.
And then suddenly beautiful flowers of all sorts of colors bloom on the bushes.
There are many varieties and types available today, including bush, cascade, and trailing varieties. Bushes can be tall or short. Flowers can be single or double, fringed, large or small.
And the color range is very diverse: from snow-white to dark purple, almost black.
There are also two-color varieties.
There are vegetative petunias that take cuttings very well. I don't do cuttings.
Last year I bought seeds of all sorts of colors. But I couldn't grow good seedlings. Some of the seeds didn't sprout, and those that did sprout died after transplanting. Only two varieties remain.
I transplanted seedlings of these varieties earlier. They produced flowers like these.
I think the soil was to blame. The potting soil I've been buying for years ran out, so I bought a different one. I transplanted my flower seedlings into individual cups in this soil, and they all died; the leaves started turning yellow, curling, and drying out. So I had to throw out all the flower seedlings and even some of the pepper seedlings.
I bought petunia seedlings at a flower shop. The seedlings were very high quality, with sturdy, well-branched bushes and flowers that were just beginning to bloom. I chose different varieties of petunias with the most beautiful colors.
The flowers were growing in small cups. I transplanted the petunias into hanging pots and boxes, adding a few granules of azophoska and well-rotted humus to the soil.
Until mid-June, the petunias were kept in the greenhouse because it was very cold here, with only 6-8 degrees Celsius during the day and light frosts at night. When the weather improved, we decorated the gazebo with the now-well-blooming petunias.
I was delighted with the petunias I bought; they bloomed abundantly all summer until the first frost.
And then they bloomed for a long time in the greenhouse.
So this year, 2025, I decided not to grow petunia seedlings, but to buy ready-made ones.
