Delicate beauty Gloria Day

Today I'll tell you about another favorite rose, this time a hybrid tea—the Gloria Day variety. This rose is a winner of many festivals and exhibitions.

Gloria Day is a French rose bred by Francis Meilland. The bush is approximately 1.2 meters tall, compact, and thornless. However, there is a second variety of this cultivar—a climbing form—that grows to 2.5-3.5 meters.

This variety is also known by the names Peace and Gioia. The rose gained its status as a symbol of peace and harmony after it was presented to the heads of delegations of the founding countries at the First General Assembly of the United Nations in 1945.

The flowers are very beautiful, well-filled, and large, reaching up to 19 cm in diameter. My bush's maximum blooms have so far been around 15-16 cm, but even this size, the very full blooms stand out among other rose varieties. When fully open, they reveal their center without losing their charm.

Gloria Day has a delicate, honeyed scent with fruity notes. This rose blooms for the first time in spring, then takes a break, and its second blooming period is longer, from early August until autumn. This is understandable, however—our summer temperatures reach 37-40 degrees Celsius, which is a bit hot for roses, and it cools down from the second half of August.

Although the rose grows as a modest, compact bush with dark green foliage, when the buds open, you realize this beauty belongs not among the others, but in a prominent spot by the entrance, by the gate. Where it's not crowded by neighboring flowers and can fully reveal its beauty. I want to root cuttings taken from it in the fall and plant them in the front yard. Last year, I rooted a branch, but gave it to a neighbor in the spring (she was also delighted when she saw these roses).

I'd also like to point out that this rose has an interesting feature: it changes color. From the moment the bud opens until it fully blooms, the flower's hues shift from yellow-green to a soft yellow with a crimson edge.

Roses can also change color with changes in air temperature. On cool days, yellow predominates in the buds, while in hot weather, the yellow fades and the pink becomes more vibrant.

This is how it's blooming now. A very delicate rose with a compact bush. If you're still deciding which hybrid tea rose to plant in your garden, I recommend Gloria Day!

Beauty, my favorite rose! I used to have one, but my Gloria had more yellow, with pink around the edges of the petals.
