Nettle and deadnettle – what are the differences between such similar plants?

Next to my new house there is an abandoned house where no one has lived for 10-15 years, so it is so overgrown with grass that it is scary to look at. But the main thing is that it is dominated by nettle And deadnettle (as I found out later). Here's how many of these medicinal herbs there are:

It goes without saying that the grass is spreading to our property, so I tried to get rid of it. Since the humidity in our village, and specifically around my house, is high (there's always standing water), that's what I decided to do My property is flooded with water.Pulling nettles by the roots. I did this wearing two gloves—rubber ones and then fabric ones. But one day, I was passing another thicket on my way to the garden and was surprised that my hands and feet weren't burned. I even stopped and touched them—no burn! This intrigued me, and I learned a lot about deadnettle. The plants are very similar. I read somewhere that the difference lies in the color of the flowers, but I can say that's nonsense, because deadnettle comes in many different varieties, including some with the same shade as the nettle.

If anyone doesn't know, but nettles in the course of theirThrough evolution, it has learned to repel herbivores with its pungent heat. So much so that now cows and other animals won't even go near the dead nettle—they're afraid.

Now, how to tell the difference:

  • If you sniff the flowers, the deadnettle will smell like honey, but the nettle will not;
  • the smell of the dead nettle is not very pleasant (from the leaves and stems):
  • The dead nettle is shorter than the nettle.

That's all the differences, so the easiest way is to touch the leaf.

This is my nettle:
