Coreopsis grown from seed is a beautiful, unpretentious perennial

Coreopsis aureus
It has blossomed in my garden,
And they fly around the flower
Swarms of butterflies and bees.

He shines like the sun,
The soul and the look pleases,
It remains fresh until frost.
Your golden outfit!

Good afternoon! I'd like to tell you about coreopsis. I used to have these flowers growing at my old dacha. They were single yellow and two-tone yellow and red, bright, very pretty, and easy to care for. I really loved these yellow "daisies."

Coreopsis belongs to the Asteraceae family and can be low-growing or tall, with single or double flowers, perennial or annual. The flower's name, translated from Greek, means "tick-like." It's unclear why it was given this name. To whom did this cute flower remind one of a tick? Perhaps its round button-shaped buds evoke an association with a swollen tick gorged with blood?

Last year (2021) I bought seeds of a perennial coreopsis called Sunbeam.

In the spring, I sowed the seeds in a box, and at the end of May I transplanted the grown seedlings into open ground.

At the end of June, flower buds appeared on thin stems, and then double, bright yellow flowers, about 8 cm in diameter, blossomed. The petals had sharp teeth along the edges.

The coreopsis bloomed all summer until frost. As autumn approached, the flower petals turned orange.

The coreopsis leaves are light green, elongated, and dissected. The bush is approximately 90 cm tall. In early summer, the leaves were attacked by caterpillars, and I had to spray them with Intavir.

Coreopsis is considered an unpretentious perennial plant that winters well with green foliage and propagates by dividing the bush and self-seeding.

But my ray of sunshine didn’t survive our Siberian winter…

And in the spring, instead of green leaves, there was a withered, dry bush. Perhaps it needed to be covered with a covering material or some compost added under the bush and covered with dry leaves.

This spring I bought coreopsis seedlings at the market.

The seller said this flower overwinters well at their dacha. I'll try covering it for the winter. If it doesn't survive the winter, I'll grow it as an annual, from seedlings.

My purchased flower has already begun to bloom and will delight me with its flowering all summer.
