How I planted onion sets without forming a bed – an experiment based on a neighbor's advice

We moved to a new house out of necessity. The garden plot here is abandoned, as no one has cared for it for a long time, and the surrounding water stagnates in the spring and dries up in the summer:

We usually plant onions in the field, but I wanted to have my own green onions, within walking distance (so I wouldn't have to wait for my husband to bring them from the field). But we just moved and there's a ton of work to do, both inside and outside. Then my neighbor said, "Just plant them, without digging." She told me she sometimes plants a little at a time like that. This is the plot I chose:

As you can see, there is water nearby, and grass is growing on the ground:

I bought these onion sets specifically for growing green onions at home:

Then I simply stuck the bulbs into the ground, root-side down. To encourage some plants to sprout faster, I trimmed the tops with scissors:

This is what happened:

Time will tell how it will grow further and what will come of it.

But I'm not urging you to do the same, because this is just an experiment with no confirmed positive results. And if you're interested in how to do everything correctly, use the links:
