I already wrote, What is a spittlebug? and what the harm it causesNow I'll tell you how I used to combat it. Just look at this thick foam – it's really dense in structure:
Therefore, before using even chemicals (I’m not even talking about folk remedies(I also wrote about them) It's very important to wash off this drool first. Otherwise, the solution won't penetrate the pest itself. You can spray the pest with folk remedies, but this isn't a 100% guarantee of eradication. Therefore, especially in cases of widespread and severe infestation, like mine, it's better to use insecticides. My tree is this size:
I'll tell you about the medications I've already tried personally:
- Karbofos. The product paralyzes the insect, but it dies after at least three hours. We prepared a solution using 60 g of the product per 6 liters of water. You can spray twice, but be sure to wait at least a month between treatments.
- Aktara. Contains a paralytic poison; leafhoppers die within 12 hours if watered at the roots, and within 2-4 hours if sprayed. 1-1.5 ml per 5 liters of water is sufficient.
- Kinmix. Identical to Karbofos, but 4 ml of the preparation is needed per 10 liters of water.
- Commander. Another powerful insecticide. 5 ml of the product is required for 5 liters of water.
And this is what it looks like before and after treatment (only the fluff from the dandelions has fallen):
You can essentially buy any other product, but I've only tried these. Keep in mind the most important requirement: rinse off the foam with clean water, otherwise using the poison will be pointless. Alternatively, you can cut off the affected parts. And don't forget about prevention—it's better to prevent than to cure.
